Catechism

The Catholic Church in Iceland offers classes in Catholic catechism.

The tuition is in the charge of priests, sisters and laymen. The Diocese has issued a book on Catholic catechism and workbooks in Icelandic.

Catechesis consists mainly in preparing children from 7 to 14 years of age for the reception of the sacraments.

Priests or sisters organize special lessons, all around the country, for children who only speak or understand Polish or English.

Children who live far away from places where organized lessons take place can participate in correspondence courses. Father Denis O’Leary provides further information.

The priests are responsible for education for those who are interested in the Catholic faith or wish to convert.

In winter, various lectures are held in the parishes in order to strengthen the faith of people, increase their understanding of the Scripture and explain the Catholic way of living.

Please contact the parish priest for more information or send email to: catechism@catholica.is

Child & Youth Protection

The Holy Father recently issued new norms for the worldwide response to the evil of sexual abuse.
The news norms affect the global Church and require:
*easily accessible reporting systems
*clear standards for the pastoral support of victims and their families
*timeliness and thoroughness of investigations
*whistle blower protection for those making allegations
*active involvement of the laity
Bishops also will be held accountable under the authority of this Motu Proprio, which covers sexual abuse of minors or vulnerable persons, sexual acts compelled through the abuse of authority, and any coverup of such crimes. The norms also require that Church institutions comply with civil reporting laws.
